National Union Catalog Connects Libraries Across Nepal

Kathmandu – The National Union Catalog (NUC) has been introduced as a unified online platform to bring together the bibliographic records of libraries across Nepal. This pioneering initiative aims to make it easier for students, researchers, and the public to locate books, journals, and other resources held in different libraries nationwide.

By integrating catalogues from multiple institutions, the NUC eliminates the need to search library collections individually. Users can now discover the location and availability of materials through a single search interface, fostering resource sharing and collaboration among libraries.

The project supports the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology’s vision of enhancing access to information and strengthening library services. It also lays the groundwork for interlibrary loans, collaborative collection development, and the preservation of bibliographic data in a standardised format.

Library officials say the NUC will play a crucial role in promoting knowledge exchange and reducing duplication of resources, ultimately helping libraries serve communities more efficiently.
